Less than a decade ago, if people wanted to organize themselves, it could only be done through some institution and chain of command. There would be a “leader” who would delegate, and group members would follow the standards set forth.
However, in the book Here Comes Everybody by Clay Shirky, we see how this is changing.
There is no longer a need for these institutions; a group can come together and organize on their own because of social media. And we are constantly seeing proof of that in today’s news (i.e. the recent attacks in Egypt).
Consumers are using social spaces like Twitter, Facebook and Four Square as tools to meet up with their friends and colleagues to discuss specific interests. Continue reading
